Referees committee explains reversal of Gerard Martin red card

Referee audio says Gerard Martin was playing the ball normally, prompting the red card to be downgraded to a yellow.

Audio released from the officiating team has explained why Gerard Martin’s red card was overturned during Barcelona’s match against Atletico Madrid.

The referee initially sent the defender off following a challenge on Thiago Almada before the VAR official recommended an on-field review.

According to the exchange between the officials, the incident was judged to be part of a normal action while playing the ball, with the resulting contact considered natural, leading the referee to cancel the red card and issue a yellow instead.

The moment became one of the biggest talking points in a match that Barcelona eventually won 2-1.
