Morocco halt the Dutch machine at the World Cup

Morocco knock out the Netherlands on penalties and move on to face Canada.

Morocco ended the Netherlands' World Cup run by winning their Round of 32 tie 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following regular and extra time.

Cody Gakpo put the Dutch ahead in the second half before Issa Diop brought Morocco back with a late stoppage-time header.

In the shootout, Yassine Bounou made a decisive save before Ismael Saibari converted the winning penalty to send the Atlas Lions through.

Morocco were the more dangerous side for long spells, especially through Achraf Hakimi's runs and midfield pressure, while the Netherlands struggled to control the rhythm of the match.

The win sets up a meeting with Canada in the next round and gives Morocco another chance to underline their place among the tournament's strongest sides.
