Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman defended his tactical decisions after the Dutch side drew 2-2 with Japan in their 2026 World Cup Group F opener.
The Netherlands led twice through Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville, but Japan responded on both occasions, including a late Daichi Kamada equaliser near the end of the match.
Koeman pointed to defensive mistakes in key moments, stressing that the more cautious approach late in the game was not the only reason for the result. He highlighted the way his team dealt with crosses and pressure in wide areas.
The Dutch coach also noted that his side still had a chance to score a third goal after Japan’s equaliser, while underlining the need for improvement before the next group match against Sweden.
The draw leaves the Netherlands under early pressure, especially after Sweden’s heavy win over Tunisia, making the second round of Group F fixtures even more important.
