Egypt created a historic moment at the 2026 World Cup by beating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time in the round of 32.
Emam Ashour opened the scoring with a 13th-minute header, before Australia levelled through a Mohamed Hany own goal in the second half.
Australia missed twice in the shootout, while Egypt converted every attempt, with Hossam Abdelmaguid scoring the decisive penalty for the nation’s first World Cup knockout victory.
Mohamed Salah started after recovering from a muscle injury and converted from the spot, giving Egypt a major psychological lift under pressure.
Egypt will now face defending champions Argentina in the round of 16 at Atlanta Stadium on July 7.
