Australia lose Italiano and Leckie before Egypt showdown

Australia will be without Jacob Italiano and Mathew Leckie through injury before facing Egypt in the last 32.

Australia have confirmed that Jacob Italiano and Mathew Leckie will miss the rest of the 2026 World Cup through injury, ahead of the Socceroos' Round of 32 meeting with Egypt.

Italiano suffered an adductor injury in training, while Leckie sustained a hamstring problem against the United States before both missed the goalless draw with Paraguay that secured Australia's progress.

Head coach Tony Popovic has already been forced to adjust his lineup, including positional changes to cover the absences in wide areas.

The injuries make Australia's task more difficult before facing Egypt in Dallas, with the Egyptian team entering the knockout stage in high spirits after a historic qualification from Group G.
