Yasser Al-Misehal's resignation as president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation has shaken the country's football scene after Saudi Arabia exited the 2026 World Cup in the first round.
The decision came after the Saudi national team finished bottom of their group with two points, drawing with Uruguay and Cape Verde before suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat against Spain.
According to international reports, Al-Misehal accepted responsibility for the failure and apologised to supporters, saying the next phase requires a fresh chapter inside the federation.
The resignation comes at a difficult time for Saudi football after a late coaching change before the tournament and the team's failure to reach the knockout rounds despite high expectations.
The federation now faces an urgent task to reorganise technical and administrative files, especially with long-term preparations continuing ahead of hosting the 2034 World Cup.
